He had already recognized his responsibility and the apology was expected. Some say he’s sincere; some say it’s a very clever defense strategy. I can’t tell.
The surprise, for insiders anyway, was actually in the fact that he spoke today: getting Duch to give the opening statement before his lawyers spoke was an interesting move.
