Eva Gilliam is a highly qualified video-maker and multimedia editor with strong creative skills and a proven ability to deliver high quality work under pressure and to deadline. She is a seasoned audio-visual storyteller and has trained youth and adults in communications and multi-media skills in Somalia, South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire. Her professional output focuses on media in post-conflict regions covering social, humanitarian and development stories and she is a key member of the Arete team. Eva has 16 years of experience working in film, radio and television, often with UN agencies and local and international NGOs. She has produced films in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia and South Africa.

This two-day course gives an overview of the Canon EOS C100 Mark II camera and is particularly focused on anyone wanting to self-shoot magazine-style films, web docs or corporate videos.

Through a series of modules, you will learn how to shoot video with the EOS C100 Mark II, how to deal with sound, lighting and movement. You will look at different styles of shooting, comparing treatment types and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of directed filmmaking against more ‘organic’, ‘run and gun’-style filmmaking.

We will explore structuring a magazine-style shoot and a corporate shoot, finding the message and discussing how to deal with corporate clients and what contracts or arrangements we should draw up.

You will also look at story structure, how the ultimate narrative of the film is achieved through editing techniques, and how that narrative should inform how we shoot. You will look at what qualities make a film compulsive and go viral and how you can incorporate those techniques in your shooting.

More than anything else this is a two-day shot-in-the-arm for independent videographers, useful to both beginners and those already shooting with an EOS C100 Mark II, or similar type cameras, who want to improve their skills or make better films. It is also ideal for anyone wanting to take the next step on from DSLR filmmaking.

About the trainer – Lauren Groenewald

Arete Stories is the expert humanitarian storytelling agency for non-profits and NGOs, working with award-winning journalists and content specialists to help tell stories that make a difference.

Lauren Groenewald started her career in broadcast journalism in 1991 as a radio producer for Channel Africa. She moved from news journalism into documentary film, which is now the primary focus of her work. Her Cape Town based company Plexus Films has produced content for SABC, Al Jazeera, PBS International and TV2 in Norway. She has produced broadcast as well as short films for NGO’s such as Equal Education and various civil rights organisations. Her work often comments on humanitarian issues – the 2008 Xenophobia in South Africa resulted in the short film CONGO MY FOOT which was part of the the Filmmakers Against Racism collective. She has filmed and worked all over the African continent from Mauritania, Ethiopia to Rwanda, Senegal,Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Lauren has been Chair of the Documentary Filmmakers Association in South Africa. She is also a mentor and tutor at the Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking and has acted as Producer for the Close Encounters Laboratory associated with the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival.

Following the release of issue #1, out on digital newsstands from 19 January, Me-Mo co-founders Manu Brabo and Fabio Bucciarelli and Libre president Matteo Dispenza, will be joining us at the Frontline Club to present the project and the inspiration behind it, and to talk about how technology is influencing new medias. Brabo and Bucciarelli will also present their work, featured in issue #1, on the Libyan revolution.

The speakers:

Manu Brabo is a freelance photojournalist whose work has mainly focused on social conflicts worldwide. Since 2007 he has been working on political upheavals, uprisings and wars in countries such as Haiti, Honduras, Kosovo, Libya, Egypt, Syria and Ukraine. Amongst other awards of merit, he is the 2013 Pulitzer prize laureate for his work covering the Syrian civil war for The Associated Press.
Brabo’s featured work in Me-Mo magazine issue #1 is a long-term and personal approach to a subject he has experienced first-hand: imprisonment in a Libyan jail.

Fabio Bucciarelli is a documentary photographer focused on conflicts and the humanitarian consequences of war. He has spent the past few years covering the major events in Africa and the Middle East, notably in Syria, Libya and South Sudan. He has won numerous awards, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal and World Press Photo.
Bucciarelli’s ongoing report on the complexities of covering the Libyan revolution is featured in Me-Mo magazine issue #1.

Matteo Dispenza began his career as a reporter for Italian television; he worked at Televideo Rai and on projects such as a screenplay for Universal Pictures / Cattleya. He then began to work on web design projects and soon founded Libre, a creative digital group based in Turin. He is currently Professor of Innovation and New Media at Istruzione Tecnica Superiore Foundation in Turin, as well as managing the technical aspects of Me-Mo magazine.

Chaired by Paul Lowe, the course director of the Masters Programme in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. He is an award-winning photographer, whose work is represented by Panos Pictures, and who has been published in Time, Newsweek, Life, The Sunday Times Magazine, The Observer and The Independent amongst others. He has covered breaking news the world over, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nelson Mandela’s release, famine in Africa, the conflict in the former Yugoslavia and the destruction of Grozny.

ME-MO magazine

Made by freelancers, for freelancers, Me-Mo provides a platform for dedicated stories which might not fit mainstream news outlets. It combines photography, video, text, 3D animation and info-graphics in order to develop and consolidate new ways of storytelling.

Publishing long-term projects and in-depth stories focused on social issues, conflict and humanitarian disasters, Me-Mo is dedicated to creating sustainable photography projects that narrate international histories, whilst also reaching out to the widest audience possible.

Me-Mo magazine will be published quarterly in English, Spanish and Italian.
