This one-day workshop will teach you how to tell humanitarian stories through photographs for media, NGOs, charities and corporate social responsibility programmes. This is a hands-on photography experience aimed at people working in the NGO sector and non-professional photographers who want to tell compelling humanitarian stories through photos.

What you will cover:

  • An introduction to Adobe Bridge (an archiving and captioning program) and Adobe Photoshop (for retouching images),
  • How to caption and send an image ready for editorial use; size, resolution and format,
  • We will talk through five images from each participant and discuss how they could be improved,
  • Using examples, we will look at composition and use of light,
  • Participants will be asked to shoot a short photo story based on what you’ve learnt. This will take between one and two hours. You will then download all images with captions and, with the trainer’s help, edit your photos into a short story which will be presented and critiqued by the group

What to bring:

  • Five photographs for discussion,
  • A digital camera (quality and size not important) or smart phone with camera,
  • A laptop if possible,
  • Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop (CS5) will be used for the training – if participants have this on their laptops already it would be good to bring along.

About the trainer – Kate Holt
Arete_LogoArete is the expert humanitarian storytelling agency for non-profits and NGOs, working with award-winning journalists and content specialists to help tell stories that make a difference. Storytelling

This one-day workshop will inspire participants to think about storytelling from an editor’s perspective.

It is complementary to the Introduction to Editing with FCP X workshop that we run and it is recommended, though not essential, that participants attend this before hand.

This workshop is designed to help you confidently make decisions in order to create concise and powerful digital narrative.

How can you construct the most effective narrative from your raw material? What should you be concentrating on when building your story?

We will look at theoretical approaches and how to apply practical tips and tricks. We’ll also analyse scenes from documentaries, films and news pieces to illustrate effective and stale storytelling.

Topics covered:
• How does editing work?
• The “trick” of editing – misdirection. “The central secret of conjuring . . . is a manipulation of interest.” (Henry Hay, The Amateur Magicians Handbook, 1972, p. 2)
• A look at the history of film editing theory and techniques
• How the audience tells your story
• The good, the bad and the ugly edit
• Emotion
• Setting objectives / Reviewing your material / Organising your edit
• Reading body language
• The importance of instituting a rhythm
• Perceptual blindness
• Using sound to your advantage

Photographers’ Night: Perfecting the Pitch http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/photographers-night-perfecting-the-pitch/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/photographers-night-perfecting-the-pitch/#respond Fri, 09 Dec 2016 13:14:26 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/?p=59647 We are very excited to announce a unique opportunity for photojournalists seeking new avenues to showcase their work; an industry night designed for pitching projects to diverse platforms – from websites like LensCulture and Feature Shoot to publishers like Trolley Books and the London Photo Fair.

We want to give photographers a welcoming platform to practice their pitching skills while receiving valuable feedback from a panel of online editors, curators and publishers. Photographers’ Night is a great opportunity to determine which outlet is best suited for bringing your project to the right audience.

Photographers who would like to present their work to discuss in a 7 minute pitch should submit one project prior to the event. They will then be given a time slot and all presenters will be listed online. Those who would like to join as a general attendee can book online for £5. After each pitch, there will be a few minutes for questions and feedback from industry guests and others. Industry professionals will be present at tables respective to the platforms of their expertise, and everyone is encouraged to visit across these groups to have a chat and a drink.

To sign up for a pitching slot please email julianne.rooney@www.beta.frontlineclub.com with a paragraph summary of one project and stills/website link, under the subject heading ‘Photographers’ Night’. Priority will be given to new, story-led projects of journalistic nature.

The Web as we know it has been with us for the last 15 years. In the last three, online readership has well surpassed paper consumption, and some major institutions such as the Guardian and the BBC had to create entire new departments to shape their digital future. Education is moving online, apps are monitoring our health, games are been used to train our teenagers and Virtual Reality is trying to make us witness situations we would never be exposed to in our normal lives. What is going on here? How has digital media changed the way we communicate our stories? And, more importantly, how can we, as authors, make the most of such changes?

This one-day workshop will cover the following:

  • Introduction to interactive storytelling
  • Possible levels of interactivity & the role of the author
  • Short & long form: online news versus interactive documentary
  • User generated content: a trend or a new way to engage with your audience?
  • A question of terminology: the transmedia trend
  • Emerging genres
  • Case studies of:  web-docs, serious games, data visualization, mobile news, personalization, social apps, non-fiction VR & more.
  • Idea generation for interactive stories
  • The bottom up approach: from the user to the idea
  • Using personas
  • Balancing authorship with co-creation & participation
  • Using a design question as a way to stay focused
  • The need of different skill sets in an interactive team

This interactive session will be divided in two:

1.In the morning, attendees will be given an overview of the state of the art in interactive non-factual narrative. Case studies will be picked together depending on the interests of the group and debate will very much be at the center of such exploration. Success and failures will be exposed, and the notion of user experience will be put in practice

2.In the afternoon, attendees will embark on a hands-on activity. Splitting in groups they will participate to an idea generating session that will put the user at the center of the creative process. The workshop is designed to experiment user centered approaches to storytelling in order to understand the full potential of the interactive form.

Radio_Large

Radio can be an incredibly powerful way to tell a story, and it’s a growing medium. This one-day course will get you started with some of the key techniques of radio documentary making.

You’ll cover the editorial essentials such as spotting an idea, building a narrative structure, finding the right contributors, as well as how to use sound creatively to grab the listener’s attention. There’ll also be tips on pitching ideas to programme editors or commissioning executives.

During the day, you’ll get hands on experience of working out a story and learning how to pitch it. You’ll hear lots of inspiring audio, and analyse the techniques used, and you’ll learn some of the principles involved in capturing the listener’s attention, and how to hold it.

At the end of the course you will have a better understanding of the potential of radio, and should be in a good position to pitch to broadcasters such as BBC Radio 4 and the World Service, or making audio features and documentaries for online broadcasters.

The course would suit those from other media or communications disciplines who are thinking of broadening their skill base as well as those completely new to the field.

About the trainers:
David Prest and Deborah Dudgeon of Whistledown Productions will teach the course. Whistledown is the largest provider of speech programmes to BBC Radio, providing landmark series such as Radio 4’s The Reunion, and Feedback, as well as a wide range of features and documentaries. Whistledown also works with universities and commercial clients to make podcasts and audio guides.
