ABC report that jailed foreign correspondent Peter Lloyd could end up keeping his job after he completes his ten month Singapore prison sentence for drugs possesion,

The director of news and current affairs, John Cameron, said Lloyd was one of the best journalists to have worked at the ABC. “His colleagues feel for him,” Mr Cameron said. “I really hope that he can re-establish his career, and preferably with the ABC. But that’s a matter for the future, and we just hope he’s OK in the meantime.” link

Peter Lloyd sentenced to ten months

Peter Lloyd, the foreign correspondent arrested in Singapore in July on drugs charges, has been sentenced to ten months in Prison. The New Delhi-based correspondent received eight months in prison for possession and consumption of methamphetamine and an additional two months for “possessing drug paraphernalia stained with ketamine”,

Lloyd’s reaction to the sentence could not be immediately determined because he stood with his back to the public gallery. His ex-wife broke down in tears and had to be consoled by a friend. The television reporter has been free on bail but his jail sentence was to begin today. link

Peter Lloyd, the ABC journalist arrested in Singapore last month, could face 10 months in prison for possession of drugs. A Singaporean man who said he bought drugs from Lloyd has already been jailed for 10 months. The New Delhi-based foreign correspondent still faces a number of related charges,

Lloyd, 41, also faces charges of possessing and consuming the stimulant as well as possessing drug paraphernalia stained with banned substances. If convicted of the trafficking charge, he faces between five and 20 years behind bars and five to 15 strokes of the cane. He faces 10 years in prison, a $S20,000 ($15,000) fine or both if convicted of the consumption charge. link

ABC News man on Singapore drugs charge

Peter Lloyd, the New Delhi based South Asia correspondent for ABC News, was arrested for selling the drug “Ice” in Singapore at the weekend. He is expected to be charged today and could face up to twenty years in prison. The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said,

“Let me make this general point to all Australians: this is another reminder to any Australian who travels overseas that they must conduct themselves in accordance with the laws of the country that they visit.” link

UPDATE: The family of jailed ABC journalist Peter Lloyd were last night trying to raise $45,000 bail to free him from Singapore’s Changi prison
