This one-day workshop will inspire participants to think about storytelling from an editor’s perspective.

It is complementary to the Introduction to Editing with FCPX workshop that we run and it is recommended, though not essential, that participants attend this before hand.

This workshop is designed to help you confidently make decisions in order to create concise and powerful digital narrative.

How can you construct the most effective narrative from your raw material? What should you be concentrating on when building your story?

We will look at theoretical approaches and apply them to practical tips and tricks. We’ll also analyse scenes from documentaries, films and news pieces to illustrate effective and stale storytelling.

Topics covered:
• How does editing work?
• The “trick” of editing – misdirection
“The central secret of conjuring . . . is a manipulation of interest.”
(Henry Hay, The Amateur Magicians Handbook, 1972, p. 2)
• A look at the history of film editing theory and techniques
• How the audience tells your story
• The good, the bad and the ugly edit
• Emotion
• Setting objectives / Reviewing your material / Organising your edit
• Reading body language
• The importance of instituting a rhythm
• Perceptual blindness
• Using sound to your advantage

Testimonials:

“Just a quick note to say thank you for a great course.  Its a great starting point and even it only was one week managed to take us though the whole process”

“Seven months have now passed since we attended our course with you at Frontline, and I am happy to report that we have enjoyed some success since then.
Since then we carried out a series of six short features for the Queen’s tennis tournament.
Here it is: http://www.lawsports.net/Artois4Anniversary.htm
As well as proving popular on the website, the feature was shown on the big screens at Queen’s during the week and seen by one of the top men at the BBC. He liked it so much that he bought it from us to open BBC 2’s coverage of the tournament! They then showed it again to open their final coverage on Sunday. As you can imagine, we were thrilled.”

“Thanks again for everything – the course was awesome!”

“Thank you for a very good course. It wasn’t easy but it was certainly stimulating.”

“Just wanted to say a personal thanks for looking after me so well on the FCP course last week.”

“The course was really great and really helped my to push on with my FCP skills and understand what is possible.”

“Thank you again for a great course!…I don’t really know what I expected but I didn’t think I would manage to make a film of any kind!”

“Thanks once again for the last week I had a really really interesting time.  And thanks once more for your patience and kindness throughout the course.  I felt intially like a real fish out of water when I arrived but certainly didnt feel that at the end of the week”

“I am so sorry I did not email you after our wonderful course at Frontline in December. Time – and the holiday season – ran away with me.  But I thought you might be interested to know that inspired by your course, I have lost no time filming and editing a demo video for a new venture I am setting up with another ex BBC colleague”

“Just thought I might let you know: all video/editing skills I learnt at the Frontline are being put to good use… in Bollywood! I am an AD on a film here, not in small part thanks to my (short) experience with you”

Solo Video Journalism (Foundation) http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/solo_video_journalism_foundation/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/solo_video_journalism_foundation/#respond Mon, 09 Nov 2009 09:30:00 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=41 The Trainer says…….The approach to all classes are “hands-on”, and through classroom presentations, daily practical exercises and regular feedback, students are continually reinforcing and building upon their skills. The atmosphere is constructive, non-competitive with learning to work as a team an essential part of the learning process, though the small class size assures individual attention, tailored to each students needs.”

With increasing demands on journalists to be multi-skilled and be able to shoot video themselves, these courses gives instruction on working as an independent, solo broadcaster. These courses havebeen developed in response to the increasing demands on journalists to become multi-skilled and embrace the rise of video journalism. Taught using a mixture of theory, hands-on practical training and constructive feedback, the course runs in two different formats. Solo Video Journalism is taught intensively over two straight weeks whereas the Condensed Solo Video Journalism is split into four weekends so that it is accessible to those working journalists and budding broadcasters who are keen to upgrade their skills, but can’t give up the day job while they do it!

The Solo Video Journalism and the condensed solo video journalism are both taught at Foundation level, which requires no prior camera experience or specific knowledge to attend.  Intermediate level; aimed at those with some previous training in camera work and/or experience shooting a finished programme.

The course contains two main elements:

* Camera craft and shooting sequences for the edit – combines theory and practical daily shooting exercises with regular feedback and critique
* Editing with Final Cut Pro – taking the rushes generated while shooting participants learn how to create final rough cuts

Duration Full Course: Two weeks 9.30am – 5.30pm every day
Duration Condensed: over 5 days
Who it’s for: Condensed solo video journalism is for those unable to attend the two week course The two week Solo Video Journalism course takes the extra time to explore how to write for broadcast and publish the finished videos online.
Aims: To equip journalists at all levels with the skills to  they need to embrace the rise of video journalism
Trainers: Anthony Wood and Simon Ruben

A previous participant says….“The trainer’s war-reporting experience transferred seamlessly to suit my tennis PR needs. The learning curve really ramped up in the second week when we all had our own edit suite. The course is brilliant for forward-thinking photographers and even non-journalists who want to learn how to work on their feet while filming in conflict zones.”
