Cartoonist Martin Rowson will be speaking at the Club in his own entertaining fashion about the power of satire, how he uses cartoons to create acerbic critiques of the world of politics and politicians and explaining how he goes about his work.

Rowson has colourfully caricatured the political climate since 1982. His recent depictions of Nick Clegg as Pinnochio have brought him praise and awards (including Political Cartoonist of the Year 2010). In 2001 Ken Livingstone appointed him London’s first Cartoonist Laureate in exchange for one pint of London Pride per annum. This payment is still six pints in arrears, and despite being apparently reappointed by Boris Johnson, not a single pint has been forthcoming from the current mayor.

Rowson‘s work has appeared regularly in The Guardian, The Times, The Independent on Sunday, The Daily Mirror, The Spectator, The New Statesman, Tribune and The Morning Star, as well as many other publications. He has penned comic books, a novel Snatches and a memoir Stuff.

Rowson won the Cartoon Art Trust’s Political Cartoonist of the Year Award in 2000 and 2004, and the Political Cartoon Society’s Cartoon of the Year in 2003 and 2007. He also won the prestigious Premio Satiri de Forte di Marmi International Satire Award in 2006.

Laurie Taylor, who will moderate the event, is a sociologist and broadcaster. He regularly presents Thinking Allowed on BBC Radio 4 and is the commissioning editor for New Humanist.

Bakhtiyar Muhtarov of Andijan – Justice and Rebirth is one of them.  He has interviewed 220 witnesses of the massacre and the subsequent arrests, torture and extrajudicial executions.  Nadejda Atayeva, Association of Human Rights in Central Asia, has collected evidence from Andijan morgue employees.  Shamsuddin Atamatov is one of the 23 businessmen whose trial led to the protests, and was a witness to the massacre.  Monica Whitlock recently produced a documentary film chronicling the tragedy.  She gained interviews with eyewitnesses.

With Bahtiyar Muhtarov, deputy director, Andijan – Justice and Rebirth

Shamsuddin Atamatov, former businessman in Andijan

Nadejda Atayeva, president, Association for Human Rights in Central Asia

Monica Whitlock, producer, Through the Looking Glass: The Andijan Massacre, and former BBC correspondent in Central Asia.

Shooting People Presents: Digital Bootcamp http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/shooting_people_presents_digital_bootcamp/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/shooting_people_presents_digital_bootcamp/#comments Sat, 04 Jul 2009 14:00:00 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=812 Shooting People, the world's leading network of independent filmmakers, in association with Frontline - the British champions of independent journalism - present 'Digital Bootcamp' ]]> A half-day training and networking session designed to help you and your film navigate the rapidly evolving digital landscape. Shooting People Creative Director James Mullighan will chair the event, which features filmmaker and digital marketeer Harriet Fleuriot and Ingrid Kopp, Head of Shooting People’s US Operations. The three will guide you through a series of panel discussions, case studies, practical exercises and networking.

Part One – Introduction, and Case Study (1)

This section asks: Why is all this important? And demonstrates how the creative and business sides of independent filmmaking are ineluctably connected. And then, to limber up, a tour of ‘Robert Greenwald’s ‘Iraq for Sale’ [this film is recommended, but not compulsory, pre-session viewing].

Part Two – Digital Glossary

Here, the session helps you decide which social network is right for your project, and how best to use it. There’s also a crash course in blogs and vlogs; ten top tech tips, from basic html coding to video compressions rates; how social media can help you, and how you can help yourself stay on top of things.

Part two – Case Study (2)
Our new scalpels are applied to Franny Armstrong, director of ‘Age of Stupid’ [again, recommended, but not compulsory, pre-session viewing].

Part Three – New frontiers in digital film marketing
What’s new – in funding, crowd sourcing, production and distribution.

Part four – Put it to the test

The participants are broken into groups, and each given an hypothetical film project. Each group will spend twenty minutes preparing a marketing and distribution plan using lessons learned earlier, and then in turn present to the group.

Part Five – Networking is not a Four Letter Word

I know we’re British, but a little networking never hurt anyone. Go on: be more American. Included in the price of the course is a drink on us, and the opportunity to network in the salubrious surrounds of the Frontline club
