This lecture and workshop is designed to help filmmakers navigate the risks and opportunities afforded by the web. It covers best social media practice, building an audience before a film is completed, crowd funding, DIY distribution techniques and more.

As well as a formal presentation by ex Shooting People and Edinburgh International Film Festival (2011) chief James Mullighan, this special edition has an extended networking session, and a live workshop of six diverse participants’ projects.

1. Digital Frontiers – Why is all this important? What’s new – in funding, crowdsourcing, production, marketing, audience-engagement, and sales and distribution.

2. Digital Strategy – How to design a website and social media campaign for your film. How social media and technology can help you, and how you can help yourself, stay on top of new developments and opportunities.

3. Crowdsourcing and crowd funding – Using case studies, the seminar will ask: What is the difference? Who are the players? What makes a good crowd funding campaign, from the fundraising trailer to the length of time, the amount you are seeking to raise and your social media strategy to solicit donations? How to make a crowd funding campaign fit into the wider web campaign for your film?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed about social media and all things digital, then Digital Bootcamp will show you how to create a manageable strategy and use available tools to get your films made and seen. You will learn how to reach and engage audiences in new and exciting ways, and you will learn how to measure the impact of your endeavours.

Once you have booked your place, you can submit your film application to be workshopped by the group. There are only a limited number of spaces for projects. Please send them via email to Merryn Johnson with ‘Digital Bootcamp Submission’ in the subject field.

We’ll look at some examples of crowdsourced projects and talk about the difference between crowdfunding (through sites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo) and crowdsourcing production (like Amazon Studios are doing for example). Crowdsourcing production can bring up a range of issues and problems so we will talk about both the good and the bad aspects of this approach. Crowdfunding is proving to be perhaps the most exciting development for filmmakers and we will look at what makes a good crowdfunding campaign, from the fundraising trailer to the length of time, the amount you are seeking to raise and your social media strategy to solicit donations. We’ll show case studies of good campaigns and talk about what made them work so well. Finally, we will outline how to make your crowdfunding campaign fit into the wider web campaign for your film.

Frontline Club at Sheffield Doc/Fest http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/frontline_club_at_sheffield_docfest/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/frontline_club_at_sheffield_docfest/#respond Thu, 12 Nov 2009 21:40:50 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2930 At this year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest the Frontline Club put on a panel covering an area of filmmaking the festival hadn’t previously examined, how you film in a dangerous situation.

Putting the panel together was extremely difficult as, due to the nature of the job, many of our panellists were either stuck in difficult places filming or had to rush off to film in reaction to sudden changes in the world.

However, it worked out for the best and our final line-up had an incredible array of experience and insight. Joining Frontline Club founder Vaughan Smith were Danfung Dennis, Jules Williamson, John D McHugh and James Mullighan from Shooting People as chair.

It was a fantastic discussion and all panellists showed clips from their work.

The panel discussed various aspects involved when preparing to shoot in a conflict zone. The resounding advice was explained best by Vaughan who said that fundamentally you should make sure you go on a shoot with a purpose. He went on to caution potential filmmakers that it’s easy to get scared before you go to a warzone when, if you work it out, the risks they could be very low.

John D. McHugh and Danfung Dennis went into greater detail about how to behave whilst on a shoot. John D. spoke of how the more you can think about what you’d do in situations the better you’ll be prepared and not get it wrong and Danfung stressed that telling the story is really important and that you must decide whether you are going for the experience or to tell a story.

Jules Williamson (apologies I don’t have a link to her stunning new film looking into a radio station helping child soldiers, but keep an eye out for it) spoke from the perspective of setting up a shoot and explained how risk assessment is important as it gives you focus, no matter what topic or situation.
It was fantastic to see the club have a greater presence at the festival this year and to bump into the various members attending. We also got a mention at various panels and it was particularly wonderful to hear Jess Search of BritDoc telling a packed room that she loved the club.

A huge thanks to the other organisations that helped us with the discussion. The session couldn’t have been possible without our producing partners DocHouse and the help of Shooting People.
