The Club Quiz returns after the summer break with quizmasters Caroline Johns and Dr Keith Surridge. Having been billed as one of ‘the hardest quizzes in London’ it is sure to attract the cream of Frontline Club quizzing talent.

The idea is for members to round up your family and friends and test your knowledge. Teams can consist of up to six people, and there will be five rounds of 10 questions. The entry cost is £5 per person with all money raised going to the Fixers’ Fund, assisting families of fixers around the world killed or injured while working with the international media.

Screen Shot 2014-09-28 at 11.59.02The Quiz Champions will win tickets to Mike Bartlett’s critically acclaimed new future history play, King Charles III, which has transferred from Almeida Theatre to the Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited season.

The Queen is dead: after a lifetime of waiting, the prince ascends the throne. A future of power. But how to rule?

Directed by Rupert Goold, this ‘bracingly provocative and outrageously entertaining new play’ (The Independent) explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain’s most famous family.

King Charles III is the fourth production to transfer from the Almeida Theatre to the West End with co-producer Sonia Friedman Productions, following Chimerica, Ghosts and 1984.

Caroline Johns is a reformed historian, having given up her PhD when the roof of her garret caved in and the novelty of penury wore off. She left the hallowed groves of academe (lecturing on the BA Journalism course at City University) to cross to ‘the dark side’ that is the private sector and now works for Deloitte as speechwriter to the UK CEO and chief of staff to the global chairman.

Dr Keith Surridge is a history lecturer in several American college programmes in London. He is the co-author of The Boer War (with Denis Judd), which, if you look hard, may even still be available in some good book shops.

The Great War

The Great War

The Great War

1914-1918. Millions of soldiers wrote letters to their loved ones from the trenches.
Millions died in the fire and the mud.

Millions came home with stories that could not be told, or could not be heard. Just like after any war.

Using live animation and a miniature film set, Hotel Modern attempt to make these experiences tangible. The audience is witness to the reconstruction of the Western Front on a tiny scale, using soil, parsley and rusty nails.

A Foley artist provides the soundtrack to the film: a rap on the table sounds like a hand grenade exploding, the striking of a match is mustard gas being released. The Great War deftly reminds us of the horror of war and begins LIFT’s After a War programme.

The Great War

The Great War

The Year I Was Born

Performers born in Pinochet’s Chile tell stories of their parents’ lives in the grip of dictatorship.

Like stunt doubles, the eleven actors re-create their parents’ experiences with photographs, letters, cassettes, old clothing, anecdotes and elusive recollections.

Playful and political, The year I was born gives a seldom-seen and highly personal insight into the impact of a parent’s actions. Two generations face one another in a reckoning of both the joy of childhood and the dark secrets from a bloody moment in international history.

Southbank Centre and LIFT are proud to premiere this new show from Argentinean artist Lola Arias, whose exceptional work using the stories of real people is seared with authenticity.

Other Desert Cities
other desert cities_old vicPulitzer Prize finalist and creator of the hit TV series Brother & Sister and contributor on The West Wing, Jon Robin Baitz has taken America by storm with his Broadway debut. Other Desert Cities, an acidly witty and deeply affecting group de force, melds the political and personal with electrifying results. Nominated for five Tony Awards, the award-winnng play now makes its UK premier at The Old Vic with Lindsay Posner (Noises Off and The Winslow Boy) returning to direct this stellar cast.

1984
1984Nominated for a 2014 Olivier Award for Best New Play, and after two sold-out runs, the critically acclaimed Headlong, Nottingham Playhouse and Almeida Theatre production of Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, 1984, transfers to the West End’s Playhouse Theatre for a strictly limited season from 28 April.

April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching.

Orwell’s ideas have become our ideas; his fiction is often said to be our reality. The “definitive book of the 20th century” (The Guardian) is re-examined in a radical new staging exploring surveillance, identity and why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever.

Terms & Conditions: Tickets valid Monday – Thursday performances from 28 April – 22 May. Subject to availability. Exclusions apply including 5 May bank holiday.

vaughan_quiz_image
In celebration of our tenth year the November Quizmaster is Frontline Club founder Vaughan Smith.

Before founding the Frontline Club, Vaughan worked as an award-winning independent cameraman and video news journalist covering wars and conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, Kosovo and elsewhere. During that time he also ran Frontline Television News, an agency set up to represent the interests of young journalists who wanted to push the envelope of their profession.

During those turbulent years, which began with the fall of Communism and lasted until 9/11, Frontline freelances captured some of the best conflict footage around the world. Vaughan himself filmed the only uncontrolled footage of the Gulf War in 1991, after he bluffed his way into an active-duty unit while disguised as a British Army officer.

The risks that Frontline journalists took were great and eight members or former members were killed while working in the field. The Frontline Club is dedicated to their memory. Vaughan, himself, was shot twice but escaped both times with light injuries. He was saved once by his mobile telephone when a bullet hit it during the Prekaz incident that launched the 1998 Kosovo insurgency.

The Frontline Club was set up by Vaughan in 2003 in honour of colleagues at the Frontline News Television agency who died pursuing their work.
