By: David Sullivan http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/post-3/#comment-1552 Mon, 30 Mar 2009 20:15:34 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=4017#comment-1552 I too recently completed a long-procrastinated close read of Johnson’s book, and found it fascinating, especially Chapter 10 on ‘the war economy and the politics of relief’ which concisely captures a lot of the insights from Alex De Waal, Mark Duffield, David Keen and others on the machinations of humanitarian and development aid in the North-South conflict.
I think it’s worth finishing your second quotation from the preface: “Yet mindful of the requirements of objectivity, humanitarians strive to apportion blame equally, their reports frequently ending with a pious even-handedness, calling on ‘all parties in the conflict’ to respect human rights, having focused on the specific acts of war often at the expense of exploring the structural patterns of injustice.”
