It is hard to know whether the politicians responsible for this looting of national assets were motivated by neo-liberal ideology, thoughtless prejudice against public ownership, or shady engagement with carpet-baggers. Privatization of public goods on the scale conducted by successive UK governments since Thatcher makes no economic sense; nor does the much-vaunted Private Finance Initiative – which possibly qualifies as the most egregious, long-term transfer of taxpayer’s funds to the private sector ever undertaken. The question we face as a nation is what, if anything, can be done to restore the silver to public ownership.
