Perhaps some of them meant it.

Now of course there are several branches with several leaders based on geographical and – you guessed it – clan divisions, some more extreme than others.

I understood that they were a youth wing of the ICU and had become increasingly radicalised as time went by. Last year Al Shabaab tolerated those NGOs and UN agencies which it considered to be assisting the Somali people, while attacking those which it thought were agents of the foreigners, be they Ethiopians or Americans or whoever.
I do agree with you about the missed chance during the days of the ICU. Lately, though, it seems that Al Shabaab has gone totally out of control. I don’t get the feeling that they have the capacity to bring order in the same way as the ICU, although there were signs of it in some of the towns they captured late last year and early this year.
I really wish I knew what to make of it. Or where to spot the glimmers of hope.

Story gets held because of pirate action, then lack of space. Then gradually gets forgotten. Things move on.

How come that story never ran?
And maybe this is a silly question, but what happened to the UIC?
