Some information I’ve read, along with John Pilger’s list of US-backed overthrown regimes in Latin America, all point to the coup being directly backed by the US. The “communist threat” was nothing but a pretext to extend American control and capitalist hegemony throughout Latin America before and during that period. One can search through common history and find out by his or her own that many other regimes were being systematically overthrown by the White House in that same period of time, not to mention those who came after that.
