His knowledge of the region and his ability to translate the stories of the people to a global audience has seen him recognised as one of the most gifted journalists of his generation. He won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting twice; first in 2004 for his coverage of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the occupation that followed. Second, for his coverage of Iraq as the United States began its withdrawal.

In March last year Shadid was captured by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s forces in Libya with three other New York Times reporters and held for six days. On his release he did not return to the US, but to the house his great-grandfather had built and he had embarked on restoring in southern Lebanon. FULLY BOOKED Frontline: Reporting from the world’s deadliest places http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/frontline_reporting_from_the_worlds_deadliest_places/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/frontline_reporting_from_the_worlds_deadliest_places/#respond Thu, 30 Aug 2012 18:00:00 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/frontline_reporting_from_the_worlds_deadliest_places/ Peter Jouvenal and the Frontline Club's Vaughan Smith will tell the thrilling story of the agency with clips from the footage they and their colleagues recorded on the front line. This event is free to attend but please register in advance. ]]>

Created in 1989 by a small group of young British men and women, Frontline News Television was a pioneering international news agency for freelance video journalists that was 20 years ahead of its time. The agency closed in 2003, by which time half of its camera-people had been killed while filming around the world.

FNTV founders Peter Jouvenal and the Frontline Club’s Vaughan Smith, in conversation with BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson, will tell the thrilling story of the agency with clips from the footage they and their colleagues recorded on the front line.

Frontline’s cameramen and women were the first to pick up small format, consumer, cameras. Their successes included securing the first western media interview with Bin Laden, the first film of the stinger missiles that altered the course of the 1980’s war in Afghanistan, key footage of the Romanian revolution, the only uncontrolled footage of the ground conflict in the first Gulf War and footage of the Kosovo conflict that led to British and NATO involvement. The dramatic story of the agency is told by David Loyn of the BBC in his book, recently published in paperback, Frontline: Reporting from the World’s Deadliest Places.

This event is free to attend but please register in advance by clicking the "book" link above. The event has been made possible through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund with which the Frontline Club Charitable Trust is currently digitising and cataloguing 1,000 hours of FNTV footage.

This entry containers spoilers for the film Big Boys Gone Bananas!*

Filmmaker Fredrik Gertten took on the multinational corporation Dole Food Company and its PR army and won. Upon the release of Gertten’s blockbuster documentary Bananas!*, which recounts the law suit 12 Nicaraguan plantation workers brought against Dole, his tenacity and journalistic mettle were tested to their limits when he was hounded by Dole’s lawyers and PR firms.

Gertten’s follow-up film Big Boys Gone Bananas!* traces his journey from the LA film festival, which is pressurised by Dole to remove Bananas!* from competition, to Gertten and his colleagues’ battle for free speech, eventually gaining the support of the Swedish parliament.

Gertten will be at the Frontline Club to give a masterclass in filmmaking against the odds. Using clips from his films and drawing on his experience of becoming the story in his fight for journalistic freedoms, he will give a detailed account of his ordeal and answer questions about his films and filmmaking in general.

Moderated by award winning investigative journalist and author John Sweeney of the BBC’s Panorama.

On 20 April, 2011 photojournalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros were tragically killed while covering the civil war in Libya.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, Benjamin J. Spatz and the American literary magazine Alaska Quarterly Review brought together 68 of the world’s leading photographers to proactively honor Tim and Chris. The result,  Liberty and Justice (for All): A Global Photo Mosaic, is an exploration of the many facets of liberty and justice through images and personal narrative.

Join Spatz and Giles Duley in the final event in Photo Week 2012 for a presentation of the proactive tribute and to discuss the challenges to interpret and depict these universal themes in a dangerous and changing world.

Chaired by filmmaker and journalist James Brabazon.

Giles Duley worked for 10 years as a fashion and music photographer before becoming accomplished humanitarian photographer. His work has been exhibited and published worldwide in many respected publications including Vogue, GQ, Rolling Stone, The Sunday Times and The Observer. In February 2011 Duley was severely injured while working in Afghanistan.

Benjamin J. Spatz is Guest Editor of the Alaska Quarterly Review and is a Truman National Security Fellow. He recently served as Special Advisor to the Government of Liberia and has worked with a relief and development NGO in Darfur, the global political risk advisory firm Eurasia Group, and the United Nations Mission in Liberia. Nearly eight years in the making, Voices of the South Atlantic is a major exhibition by Argentinian photographer Adriana Groisman, which marks the 30th Anniversary of the Falklands/Malvinas War.

Join us at the Frontline Club where Groisman will be speaking about her motivations for the project and her experiences whilst making the work.

Brief but bloody, the Falklands/Malvinas War remains a defining moment in the Falkland’s history as well as Britain’s and Argentina’s. To this day, sovereignty of the islands remains a contentious issue and tensions are mounting over the hunt for oil and gas in the Falkland’s waters.

An experienced photographer, Groisman‘s work has appeared in major publications around the globe, including The Smithsonian Magazine, Newsweek, The Atlantic, Aperture, Sette-Corriere della Sera in Italy and French GEO, and has been displayed at numerous galleries and festivals.

Moderated by Director of Autograph ABP Mark Sealy.
