Press freedom report 2008 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/press_freedom_report_2008/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/press_freedom_report_2008/#comments Thu, 23 Oct 2008 15:02:27 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2363 The 2008 Press Freedom Index was published on Wednesday by Reporters Without Borders. You can see a full listing of the rankings here,

“The post-9/11 world is now clearly drawn,” Reporters Without Borders said. “Destabilised and on the defensive, the leading democracies are gradually eroding the space for freedoms. The economically most powerful dictatorships arrogantly proclaim their authoritarianism, exploiting the international community’s divisions and the ravages of the wars carried out in the name of the fight against terrorism. Religious and political taboos are taking greater hold by the year in countries that used to be advancing down the road of freedom.” link

Only a few countries rose noticeably in the ranking namely,

Lebanon (66th), for example, has climbed back to a more logical position after the end of the bomb attacks on influential journalists of recent years. Haiti (73rd) continues its slow rise, as do Argentina (68th) and Maldives (104th). But the democratic transition has halted in Mauritania (105th), preventing it from continuing its rise, while the slender gains of the past few years in Chad (133rd) and Sudan (135th) were swept away by the overnight introduction of censorship.

Mark Wood steps down from ITN http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/mark_wood_steps_down_from_itn/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/mark_wood_steps_down_from_itn/#respond Tue, 30 Sep 2008 14:08:40 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2317 Mark Wood, chief executive of ITN, is to leave the television company after six years to “pursue opportunities outside the company”. The one time foreign correspondent will remain as Chairman of ITN for the time being. He entered the world of foreign correspondents in 1976. He joined ITN after a stint with Reuters in Vienna, East Berlin, Moscow and Bonn between 1977 and 1987,

With a degree in Russian and German from Leeds University, he was an ideal choice as a foreign correspondent and worked in both countries. “It’s very hard to operate in these places and the KGB and Stasi were not easy to deal with,” he said. link

Foreign Policy bought by Washington Post http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/foreign_policy_bought_by_washington_post/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/foreign_policy_bought_by_washington_post/#respond Tue, 30 Sep 2008 14:01:18 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2316 Foreign Policy magazine has been acquired by the Washington Post Company. Washington Post editor and foreign correspondent Susan Glasser will join the magazine as executive editor,

“Foreign Policy is a terrific magazine, and I’m pleased it will become a part of our company,” said Donald E. Graham, chairman and chief executive officer of The Washington Post Company, in a statement. “We are committed to great magazine journalism, and I hope Foreign Policy will also become one more center of innovation that helps us expand our journalism in the online arena.” link

Although Moises Naim, current FP editor and publisher, adds somewhat hopefully given the current economic climate and general misery in print media,

“In an era in which too many newspapers and magazines are retreating from international news, The Washington Post Company is smartly bucking the trend.” link

Daniel Pearl jam session http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/daniel_pearl_jam_session/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/daniel_pearl_jam_session/#respond Tue, 30 Sep 2008 11:00:07 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2312 FODfest, or Friends of Danny, is a concert tour to celebrate the life of Daniel Pearl, the WSJ journalist murdered in Pakistan in 2002. The first show takes place on what would have been Pearl’s 45th birthday on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m., at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, reports the Bershire Eagle,

“Whether it was Boston or Bombay, this is how (Danny) would meet people. He would jam with people and he would make friends. And that’s what we’re trying to do with FODfest,” said Mack, who befriended Pearl through music in Atlanta in 1991. “I’d say that the only difference between the role journalism played in his life and the role music played in his life is that he didn’t earn his living from music,” said Mack. link

Bruce Wallace becomes LA Times Foreign editor http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/bruce_wallace_becomes_la_times_foreign_editor/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/bruce_wallace_becomes_la_times_foreign_editor/#respond Thu, 21 Aug 2008 10:20:33 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2223

The LA Times blog reports that Bruce Wallace, Tokyo bureau chief for the Los Angeles paper, is to head the foreign desk with immediate effect,

Bruce was based in Japan, but during the last four years he has been a kinetic firefighter, parachuting from hotspot to hotspot. He made two lengthy trips to Iraq, embedding with Marines and a British Army unit. He has reported from Afghanistan, including Kandahar in the violent south. In 2006, he joined our coverage of the Israeli-Hezbollah war in Lebanon. In Asia, he reported from India, Pakistan and North Korea. link

Interestingly for a newspaper in these dire financial times, the LA Times holds onto an impresive array of foreign correspondents across the world – including our own Deborah Bonello in Mexico City. However, given the economic state of the newspaper and the general demise of news in the States I’m not sure how long the LA Times map of foreign correspondents will remain as well populated as it currently is.

New job for Lara Logan http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/new_job_for_lara_logan/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/new_job_for_lara_logan/#respond Thu, 26 Jun 2008 07:52:14 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2120 Lara Logan, CBS Chief foreign correspondent, is set to switch jobs and location. She will move from London to Washington D.C. Her new role will be Chief foreign affairs correspondent. However, she will still cover the war in Iraq and cover stories elsewhere,

“She will still travel all over the world, but she will based in Washington instead of London,” said Sean McManus, the president of CBS News. “She will still periodically cover the war in Iraq, and she will still cover international stories.” link

Speaking on The Daily Show last week Logan lambasted the mainstream press in the US for its coverage, or lack thereof, of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,

“I would like there to be more coverage of the wars,” she said. “I’d like there to be more money to have a bureau in Afghanistan as well as in Iraq. I’d like to see Zimbabwe on the air. That’s part of what my job is, to fight for those things.” link

For more on the move, and other news on Logan…, go to The Huffington Post.

From Broadway to Baghdad http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/from_broadway_to_baghdad/ http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/from_broadway_to_baghdad/#respond Wed, 18 Jun 2008 09:35:26 +0000 http://www.beta.frontlineclub.com/dev/?p=2096 Campbell Robertson, New York Times Broadway gossip columnist, is heading to Iraq – “once the Tony’s are over” – for the United States leading broadsheet. Explaining the decision James Glanz, Baghdad Bureau Chief, says the paper could do with some fresh ideas,

“Look, he’s an untraditional war correspondent the way a lot of us are,” said Mr. Glanz, who was a science writer before leaving for Baghdad four years ago. “He’s coming from a different background and point of view from everyone else there. And right now, we can use some fresh ideas and perspectives.” link

The New York Observer says Robertson will start working in Baghdad from the beginning of July when panto season starts when “the story is falling from the front page”.
