So maybe the Frenchies were trying to cut down their risk. But if they were sailing from Australia, as I gather they were, why not just go around the Cape?

Losing a ship for a couple of months, spending an extra million dollars to have it freed and having a Filipino crew member killed is still, on balance, more economically viable than sailing around Cape Point. But why you’d do it in a luxury yacht is beyond me…
