For me, the racism in Brazilian society is worse than over here because it is so widely denied. Brazilians love to think that because there has been so much mixing of blood over the centuries, race is no longer an issue. But it’s just not so. Yes, maids have to put up with a lot: poverty wages being only the start. The rooms they live in, as you say, are awful. And as for their black menfolk: the only time you see a black man on TV, he is being chased by police.
