No, not lying on the purchases. Just was not into buying records until I was 13. I used to tape quite a lot of stuff, before I started buying anything. If you want proof, I still have my ticket for Bauhaus at the Birmingham Odeon on (I think) July 3, 1983. It was their final tour - before they reformed recently that is - and I was 13 and much to my annoyance they did not play Bela Lugosi's dead. I never liked the Smiths and I still don't. I know that is hugely uncool, but while I like some of the lyrics I just didn't ever gel with them. You not on Lastfm Rob?

The tedious thing to point out is that Bow Wow Wow were basically the first incarnation of the Ants (whom MM persuaded to ditch Adam) plus Annabella Lwin. But I’m not entirely sure I believe your claims about Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees. My first purchase was pretty cool but that was a fluke. I bought a questionable album at about the same time and I think it was to take me about five years to realise that the point of music was to buy stuff no-one else had heard of so that I could incredibly pompous and dismissive of acts as mainstream as The Smiths.

I kind of like the Ants at that time, but I was only just getting into music. The next thing I bought, maybe a year later, was the singles compilation Once upon Time by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I didn’t really get into music though until I got Bela Lugosi’s dead by Bauhaus – and NO, I didn’t have black hair, white make up and drink cider black in Birmingham every Friday night…
